On Friday 24th May, 16  Rotary Club of Calvia members and friends got on their “glad rags” and attended a truly excellent concert in the Auditorium situated right on the Paseo Maritimo.  The event was organized by the Rotary Clubs of Mallorca to celebrate the 50th Anniversary year of the Auditorium.

In fact, the project of construction of the Auditorium had been started at the beginning of 1967.  Marcus Ferragut Fluxa had invested everything he had to create his dream of Spain’s very first centre for cultural events, music for all tastes, as well as meetings and conventions.  He saw his dream come true on 3rd September 1969 when the Auditorium was inaugurated by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin, led by Herbert von Karajan, playing Beethoven’s 6th Symphony.  Since then his son Rafael Ferragut Bonafe has led the project, in more recent years assisted by his own sons and family.  He was present on Friday for a very special celebration.

Thanks to Jan, our Club members had some of the best seats in the house, and thoroughly enjoyed the many different aspects of the concert which included the Blauets of Lluc, the Palma Municipal Band, the University Choir and the University Orfeo Choir, and of course our very own Rotary Youth Orchestra.  Also included was the very special video of the Serra de Tramuntana and a presentation of photos of the actual construction of the Auditorium.

RC Calvia members had the opportunity to meet many other Club members during the interval, enjoying a glass of cava on the Auditorium upper terrace with beautiful views over the Bay of Palma. Altogether a special Rotary event. Many congratulations to everyone involved in the organization.
