The dignity pack project was started aprox 15 yrs ago by a local GP and a number of volunteers. They started by handing out a number of packs to the homeless the packs included the following soap, deodorant, tooth paste and tooth brush, shampoo. Unfortunately the project folded after a few years due to a drop off in donations and volunteer helpers.
4 years ago Rotary Calvia International revived the project aiming to donate aprox 200 packs at Christmas and Easter. In addition to the original dignity pack contents we added socks, combs and underwear and a bar of chocolate. The packs were divided 75% male and 25% female with the female packs including sanitary products, funding for the project came from donations of cash from members and friends of the club. We spent 3000E to purchase supplies. In addition to the dignity packs a member based in Germany sent 17 boxes of winter clothing which we also distributed to the poor. The value of the clothing donation exceed 5000E with shipping costs from Bavaria an additional 1700E.
Subsequently we have raised the number of packs from 200 to 350, we work with a number of food banks based in Palma to donate the packs as we believe they are better able to identify the recipients most in need of the packs. We plan to continue this coming easter.
