Oh, what a night!
On a very warm and sticky evening, nearly 60 Members of Rotary Club Calvia International (RCCI) members and their guests enjoyed a great night at the Lindner Hotel in Portals Nous at the end of June, saying goodbye to Nidya Melone as President of the Club and welcoming Ralf Jansen as the new President.
After a welcome drink, the Handover Ceremony was ably conducted by our Sargeant at Arms, Geoff Moore, welcoming, first of all, some very distinguished guests, HRH Princess Birigitta of Sweden and Dolina Reynolds, International Department of Calvia Town Hall (and a Paul Harris Fellow).
Nidya reluctantly handed over the badge of office to Ralf. In doing so she paid tribute to the Officers and Board of RCCI for their support and work in raising significant sums for ASDICA, a charity which helps the handicapped in Calvia and their families, the Allen Graham Foundation, which helps youngsters make the transition from orphanage/foster care into the world of work and responsibility. Also Deixalles, which provides training and rehabilitation for those in the community at risk and San Vincente de Paul College, where the purchase of computers for the Students in a socially deprived area provides, for some, the incentive to complete their education and for others how they can acquire digital skills.
Ralf paid tribute to Nidya and the members for their hard work and dedication. He introduced Gerdi Peitsch as the Incoming President and said that he intended to continue the work embarked upon by his predecessors – the last three of which had been women – to raise money to help those in the community less fortunate than ourselves under the banner of Service above Self.
After the speeches and presentation of flowers by President Ralf to Nidya, and by Geoff Moore to Ulla Jansen, the President’s wife, on behalf of the Members, everyone enjoyed an excellent Buffet.
Izzy Newman, a great supporter of the Club, entertained us throughout the evening and a large number of members and guests took to the floor. As the photos show, the setting was beautiful, the food was excellent (as was the company), and one and all had a great evening/night.
Well done Ralf for picking such a unique venue.
