Geoff Moore, our Sargeant at Arms, spoke at our Meeting on 17 June on Rotary Club Calvia’s responsibility as its sponsor club to new Club in Majorca.
He provided a potted history of his involvement with the project, from the approach to him last year by the current District Governor asking that he form the new club, leave Rotary Club Calvia International and become its first President. Geoff agreed to take on the challenge but only on the basis that he would stay here with this club and pass on the idea of his being the first president of the new club. Since then, the recruitment area has been determined – five municipalities in the North East – a web -site has been set up, publicity flyers distributed, four potential founder members identified, the name of the club determined (at least for the foreseeable future, until the Members confirm it) Rotary Club Talayots International and its venue agreed – Son Severa Golf Club.
The Director of the Golf Club had been and continued to be of considerable help. Not least because he has set up a group in the North East to promote employment, culture and social development, and he had the necessary political connections to help get things moving quickly. Though the District Governor had hoped to have the new club set up by the end of his term, Geoff had had to tell him that was far too optimistic. This advice had been accepted.
Rotary Club Calvia International, having voted to sponsor the new club, would need to welcome prospective members to our club to enable them to see how Rotary works on the ground, help the potential officers with the necessary paperwork, policies and procedures as well as undertaking joint fundraising and social events. This was in the future, and Geoff promised to keep us up to date with progress.
We look forward to hearing from Geoff later in the year.
